The Day We Fell in Love with an Unloved Airbnb That Became the Start of Bramble & Stone Escapes
The moment we first saw the barn on Rightmove we were already hooked. We couldn’t wait for the official viewing day. That next day we found ourselves driving up to Derbyshire, parking on the road, and walking past the property just to catch a glimpse. The excitement was bubbling up, and every step felt like a step closer to something special.
Whilst we were in the area we stopped off at the cafe, visited the local butcher, and chatted with the locals. Almost everyone said the same thing: “Have you been in yet? It’s tiny!” They said it like it was a warning, but it didn’t put us off. Instead, it made us more curious. By the time the viewing day came, we were already half in love with the idea of the barn.

The First Walk Up the Drive
Walking up the gravel drive felt right. There was a quiet calm in the air, the kind of feeling that catches you off guard. The birdsong was incredible and the barn was just about visible from the gate. When we arrived, the cleaner and estate agent were outside chatting. We showed ourselves around, eager to explore.
Opening the door was a different story to what we had been imagining, an overwhelming sense of disappointment instantly made me slump. The kitchen had been there since 2011 and looked every bit of it. The whole place felt like a cave — dark, a little damp, and smelling exactly like one. The walls were painted magnolia, and a sofa was pushed hard against the back wall. It felt unloved, uncared for and not living up to the exterior and setting one bit.
The Steep Ladder and the Upstairs Surprise
Then there was the ladder upstairs. It looked steeper than necessary, and the dark wood stain didn’t help. I braved the climb, and at the top, I was greeted by a “live, laugh, love” wall sticker, more magnolia walls, and a bolster cushion that looked like it was ready to walk itself out to the tip.
But then I looked up.
That tiny window framed an enormous view. It was the kind of view you want to wake up to every morning. The tired walls and unloved corners suddenly didn’t matter. The barn felt unhappy, but not beyond saving. She just needed someone to love her again.

Seeing Potential Where Others Saw Flaws
Standing in that tiny, dull space, we knew we were going to be the ones to bring this barn back to life. It wasn’t just a building; it was a story waiting to be rewritten. The flaws were clear, but so was the potential. The barn had character, history, and a view that made every tired corner worth the effort.
We imagined brightening the kitchen, opening up the space, and letting the natural light flood in. We pictured the ladder softened with a fresh coat of paint and the walls filled with colour and warmth. The barn wasn’t just a project; it was a promise.
What Came Next
The next step was saying yes. Making the offer and the start of a long journey. The real work was about to begin — stripping back, repairing what was broken, and making the barn homely again.
We knew it wouldn’t be easy. There would be some challenges, surprises, and plenty of hard work. But standing there, looking out that tiny window at the vast view, we felt ready. The barn had chosen us, and we were ready to choose her back. Come back next week for part 2
Have a great week, we will share the next part of the story with you next Saturday at 9am.
With love,
Rebecca and the Bramble & Stone Family

The view that made us realise, the things we could change didn't matter, it's the things that we couldn't that did- that view.
